How we Protect Drinking Water:
Part IV of the Clean Water Act

The Thames Sydenham & Region has Risk Management Officials and Inspectors around the region working with the Municipalities to ensure the source of drinking water stays protected! Learn the kinds of policies that are within the Source Protection Plan here!

What is a Risk Management Official and Inspector?

Policy Approaches:

Prescribed Instruments

Prescribed Instrument Policies are found within the Source Protection Plan for the various Ministries and Municipalities to refer to when a Drinking Water Threat is managed through an Environmental Compliance Approval, Nutrient Management Act, and/or other Ministry Approvals. Through these processes, the Ministry or Municipality has followed the SPP policies to manage the drinking water threat.

S. 57 Prohibitions

Prohibition Policies are enforced under Section 57 of the Clean Water Act, 2006. These policies prohibit potential drinking water threats from arising on property. They are applied in the most sensitive areas and address most significant threats.

S. 58 Risk Management Plans

Risk Management Plans Policies are enforced under Section 58 of the Clean Water Act, 2006. Risk Management Plans are like contracts between the Risk Management Official and the Person Engaged in the Activity that set out measures to mitigate a drinking water threat.
